The one personality trait that men care about almost as much as your appearance

When it comes to choosing a lover or a partner, it will come as no surprise that men place quite a lot of emphasis on appearance.

But a new study by beauty and wellness platform Bookwell has revealed that men care about humour too.

Relationship expert Megan Tuohey said humour was a key driver for attraction between potential couples.

'It's thought that someone who is funny, sends signals that a life with them would also be enjoyable, so we prioritise this trait when flirting, dating and entering relationships,' she told FEMAIL.

'We also know that the more jokes that are told between a courting/flirting couple, indicate that they are attracted to each other,' she added.

Women also wanted someone they could laugh with, placing it as equal first on their priority list.

'Essentially this statistic is telling us that both women and men use shared humour as a marker of attraction and longer term compatibility,' Ms Tuohey said.

'This is why it's so high on their list of priorities.'

When looking for long-term love and a satisfying relationship, it's safe to say that smart is the new sexy.

Intelligence was cited as a top trait for almost two-thirds of women when looking for a partner, while just 13 per cent prioritised looks.

Men too are more likely to seek a smart partner, with more than half the men surveyed stating intelligence was a primary concern.

'Funny people are smart and smart people are sexy. Ever since George married Amal, being clever has become the new black,' Ms Tuohey said.

'Apart from this, we also know that intelligent people tend to be higher earners, which when choosing a life partner will change the trajectory of our longer term lives should we partner with them.

'Financial instability and insecurity are the most argued about topics in relationships, and are very often brought into my therapy practice,' she added.

Ms Tuohey said that women who are looking for a long term partner, are likely thinking about longer term priorities.

'They're looking for someone to set up a life with that is reliable, dependable and secure,' she said.

'As intelligence is something we can measure from interactions with a person and take a reasonably good guess from asking about the type of work that they do, women tend to use it as a rule of thumb when considering the fit of that person to be their significant other.

'So intelligence becomes a key measurement when considering who our perfect-for-us partner is.'
